Basics class

The aim of these classes is to introduce the basic skills necessary to safely join the general classes where technical practice is more emphasised.

The emphasis of the basics classes is on the following points:

  • Stretching and warming up.
  • Movement practice.
  • Falling practice (ukemi).
  • An introduction to basic attack forms (holds and strikes).
  • Blending or harmonizing with an attack versus struggling or attempting to escape from it.
  • Basic pinning techniques.
  • Basic projection techniques.

For the basics class a full fitting loose track suit is sufficient (although a Judo outfit is preferable right from the start). Training takes place barefoot on mats. To join the general classes a white Judo style outfit must be worn and can be purchased through the Dojo (check with the instructor for details). In addition a personal set of weapons (wooden sword, staff and knife) should be purchased in the first year. Please ask the instructor about the different options available.

Acquisition of the basic skills necessary for safe practice in Aikido as taught in the basics class brings the beginner to the first rank in Aikido: 6th kyu. This rank is the prerequisite for participation in the general class on Tuesday nights (20:05 to 22:00) in the Naarden / Bussum dojo. In the Zutphen Dojo all classes are open to all levels of practitioners at the present time (open class).
